    一、教學目標

    This 2-credit course is to equip students with essential knowledge and skills in preparing and delivering all aspects of pronunciation- sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation. The course aims to train students to:

    1. pronounce English sounds clearly and accurately in words, sentences, and passages,
    2. be aware of particular pronunciation points or features for effective communication
    3. place stress properly both in controlled activities and in natural conversational scenarios,  
    4. acquire near-native intonation patterns and American English rhythm, and to
    5. produce various English intonation patterns clearly and naturally.

    三、教材內容:課本、講義、數位教材    

    1. This course will cover syllables, stress, and consonants in the first semester, and vowels, intonation, rhythm, and skills of connected speech in the second semester.

     

    1. Online free-ware will be used to assist students’ self-learning. Websites often referenced to improve skills of Phonetics such as: The Sounds of English and Spanish – The University of Iowa: http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/phonetics/ ;  Doing Phonetics by Computer: http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/

     

    四、實施方法:講授、討論        

    All sessions will be held in a language laboratory and devoted to intensive oral practices and drills. The teacher will explain the mechanisms underlying each sound by using audio and video materials for students’ reference. Students are expected to be involved in practices and drills individually or in pair-work. In addition, pop quizzes may be given at the discretion of the instructor and will not be made up.
