Course Description:

Journalistic English is an elective credit offering that is designed to introduce students to varied aspects of journalism as well as to provide the opportunity for students to create journalistic models through the production of materials. The student is expected to pursue excellence in communication skills and is given the opportunity to use the latest technology in production and design. The student will understand the role mass media plays in the community and in our society

Objectives:

1. Read and discuss writing/media “pieces” from a variety of sources
2. Read and evaluate models to identify main ideas
3. Examine, identify and analyze the diction and styles of various writers
4. Read and analyze style to recognize varying techniques, usage and effective styles

5. Identify the purpose and construction of story leads

6. Evaluate effectiveness of the structure of written materials and demonstrate a flexibility     in selecting appropriate structure

7. Study a variety of model types to identify varied types of writing

1. Consult sources of information for research
2. Analyze models or methods of effective research
