    三、教材內容:

The selected articles in the course packet are managed to motivate class discussion. They also serve as brain-teasers to make the students think critically.  The purposes of the course are designed to help students promote listening, speaking, and reading skills, as well as vocabulary and grammar knowledge by diverse arrangements of pair-up activities or group discussions. Occasional listening prompts or video clips offered by the instructor may play the role to trigger more discussions and increase greater classroom dynamics that facilitates students’ use of spoken English.

    四、實施方法:

In this class, panel discussions in English are highly encouraged and students’ participation will be evaluated accordingly.  Orally and/or literally, students are expected to share their opinions on certain issues and interact with each other.  Furthermore, students are encouraged to pose questions and offer answers based on what they read as much as what they know. Lectures are delivered by the instructor, but not limited, to just direct the class, maintain the flow, and facilitate the dialogue practice or discussions. Therefore, students, as the center of the class, are expected to take initiatives to interact with their fellow classmates and the instructor.

    八、課堂要求: Course Requirement & Policies

    1. Students are required to preview the course materials. By what means, they have to look up unfamiliar vocabulary and try to learn how to paraphrase and explain it. In addition, they have to bring in their thoughts, opinions, and question to class for discussions. In other words, students are required to participate actively in class.
    2. Cell phones should be turned off or kept in silent mode in class.
    3. No absence is allowed, even if a sick leave. However, to make up for your absence, you have to write an English letter (more than 300 words) explaining the reason(s) of your absence, and giving methods to improve this situation in the future. The explanation letter has to arrive in the instructor’s hands at the beginning of the next class, or your absence will be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs. In the end, it will result in failure in the course. Lateness over 20 minutes will be calculated as absence.
    4. Writing assignment, if any, should be turned in at the beginning of class on the date designated. There will be no make-up presentations and exams. Late assignment submissions result in the score of zero. Grades are not negotiable in any way, and no substitute tasks can be provided for missed homework or tests.
    5. Students who are not able to give presentations on the assigned date need to inform the instructor two weeks ahead and find others to change the time slot for presentations under the instructor’s approval.
