Advanced English for Music Students

Course objective: To give music majors wishing to improve their English skills opportunities to discuss topics relevant to their major and experience giving class presentations. To facilitate this, the students will view movies concerned with music or listen to different types of music. Handouts will be provided and class discussions will follow.
Course assignments and exams: Students will be expected to give two class presentations (67% of course grade) during the term on a favorite composer or musical composition. In addition, there will be a final exam (33% of course grade) which will be based on the films students have been required to watch.

The Flight of the Concords (HBO TV series based on life and career or two musicians)
God Save the Girl
Bye Bye Birdie (Broadway musical)
Thoroughly Modern Millie (Broadway Musical)
Oklahoma (Broadway Musical)
Class Policies: Attendance is absolutely required as this class is primarily about viewing/listening and discussion. Students with more than 2 unexcused absences will be penalized 5 points for every absence.
