一、教學目標：This is a one-year course, which is designed to be the first part of the history of English Literature. It aims to help students understand the historical background of English Literature in order to learn English literary works well. It starts from the Middle Ages and ends in the 18^th century. In the first semester, the reading materials cover introductions of Anglo-Saxon Literature, Anglo-Roman Literature, and Middle English Literature in the 14^th and 15^th centuries. In this semester, the focus lies in the Elizabethan age, the 17^th century, the restoration and the 18^th century. The classical literary works of the writers during these periods, such as William Shakespeare, John Donne, John Milton and others, are also introduced.

三、實施方法：The instructor gives lectures most of the time. Students are required to do oral presentations on the assigned reading materials.

四、評量方式：

    (1) Regular attendance and active participation in class (10%).

    (2) Read assigned reading materials before class.

    (3) An oral presentation (20 %), a mid-term exam (30%), and a final exam (40 %).
