Dr. Chen Hsing An

Dr. Chen is the First Prize winner in the 7th Asia Vocal Competition. She was awarded the Taiwan MOE Scholarship and the Teaching Assistant Ship Scholarship of UCLA for her doctoral study. Dr. Chen completed her D.M.A. in vocal performance under the well-known Russian baritone Prof Vladimir Chernov at UCLA. She has been the Head of Vocal Studies at the School of Music at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Arts Singapore since 2013.

Dr. Chen started her professional singing career as Prince Orlofsky of Die Fledermaus with the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra. In the seven years in which she performed as a mezzo-soprano, Dr. Chen sang many roles with the National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan), Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra such as Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Carmen, and Brangaene (Tristan und Isolde). In 2000, she sang Janáčeks Glagolitic Mass under the baton of Wen Ping Chien with National Symphony Orchestra for the National Day Concert; Mozart’s C minor mass, and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis produced by Hallelujah Oratorio Society in Singapore.

Dr. Chen has developed her career as a spinto /dramatic soprano. Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra under Felix Chen Chun Sen’s baton,  was her first role in this new repertoire. The fiendishly difficult role of Turandot with the Malaysia Symphony Orchestra was a highlight of her singing career with the production of the Malaysia Pinang Arts Council in Pinang and Kuala Lumpur in 2003. In 2004, Dr. Chen was engaged to sing Turandot again for a performance celebrating the birthday of Thai Princess Galyani Vadhana. In 2005, she worked with Bangkok Opera Company to sing Verdi’s Aida and for a gala concert for the 50th-anniversary concert of Malaysia YTL Enterprise Group.  Panang Arts Council engaged her to sing the role of Carmen in the same year. In 2006, she performed Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) under the baton of András Ligeti with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra and the charity concert for the King of Malaysia, Syed Sirajuddin. Bangkok Opera Company 2007 engaged her to sing Bruennhilde in Die Walküre.  Before studying at UCLA, she sang Turandot with the Singapore Lyric Opera Company at Esplanade Theater in 2008.

Dr. Chen gave her first DMA recital at UCLA in 2010. In 2011, she scored success in the role of the Old Prioress in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites for Opera UCLA, and she also participated in the twentieth anniversary of the Singapore Lyric opera at Esplanade. Later in the same year, Dr. Chen sang Tai Ran Shao's 1947 Overture with the Torrance Symphony Orchestra in California. Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, the 100th anniversary National Celebration Day concert under the baton of Shao Chia Lü in Taiwan, was her last major performance in 2011.

In 2013, Dr. Chen sang the Beethoven Symphony No.9 at Esplanade Concert Hall. Later, she was reviewed for her successful performance at Verdi’s Gala Concert of Singapore Lyric Opera and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella. In 2014, Dr. Chen was engaged to perform Mozart’s Requiem under the baton of Lim Yau. In 2015, she was invited to perform a concert to celebrate the 50th National anniversary in Singapore and Bach’s Magnificat with the NAFA Orchestra under the baton of Ashely Solomon.  In 2016, Dr. Chen sang in two opera concerts in Los Angeles successfully, afterwards, she was invited to sing in a Season Concert 2017-18 with the international well-known Baritone Vladimir Chernov by Arcadia Performing Arts Center, Los Angeles 2017. In 2018, Dr. Chen was invited to sing at a fund-raising concert of Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the well-known Maestro Jahja Ling for the Spiritual Grace Presbyterian Church in Singapore. Later, she sang the opera Strauss’s Die Fledermaus for the NAFA 80th Anniversary celebration production. Before the end of 2018, Dr. Chen sang as a soloist of the Singapore NAFA Chamber at the opening concert of the 11th Annual International Chamber Music Festival in China, and the Yellow River Cantata with Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra of the Yellow River Cantata with conductor Tsung Yeh in 2018.

In 2019, she sang Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy under Maestro Andrew Litton with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In 2023, Dr. Chen resumed her performances at a collaborative faculty concert of the National Taiwan University of Art and NAFA, and the Official launch of the University of the Arts Singapore Logo & inaugural UAS Symposium. In 2024, the National Kaohsiung Normal University invited Dr. Chen to sing Mahler's Second Symphony (Resurrection) under Wang Chan’s baton at the Weiwuying Concert Hall in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. 

Dr Chen has recently conducted vocal master classes and lectures at the National Taiwan Normal University, National Kaohsiung Normal University, Taipei University, National Taiwan University of the Arts, National Tainan University of the Arts,
